First Day Cover Text for "The People's Liberation Army Forces, Hong Kong"

The People's Liberation Army Forces arrived in Hong Kong at zero hour on 1 July 1997. Known as the PLA (HK), their primary responsibility is for the defence of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

For the past seven years, the PLA (HK) has performed its defence responsibility admirably, effectively upholding the principle of "one country, two systems" and winning the hearts of Hong Kong people by their community spirit.

Hongkong Post pays tribute to the PLA (HK) with the issue of six new stamps featuring the various faces of the Forces.

$1.40 The Powerful and Civilised Military Force
The PLA (HK)'s strict code of discipline and their ability to uphold law and order without infringing on civilian lifestyle has earned it the epithet, "The Powerful and Civilised Military Force".

$1.80 Social Services
The PLA (HK) is actively involved in charity and community services such as blood donation campaigns and tree-planting events, as well as donations for the construction of schools in needy areas and educational sponsorship of deprived children in the Mainland.

$2.40 Open Day
The PLA (HK)'s annual Open Day is an opportunity for visitors to take a closer look at its training facilities and military equipment, witness its impressive demonstrations of military and arts skills, and share a moment of camaraderie with members of the Forces.

$2.50 Army
The Army of the PLA (HK) has achieved notable success. In June 1998, it was given the Second Class Merit Award, and from 2000 to 2002 it was ranked the "First Class Training Unit" by the General Staff Headquarters of the People's Liberation Army.

$3 Navy
Often referred to as the "Mighty Force on the Sea", the Navy of the PLA (HK) is primarily responsible for Hong Kong's maritime defence.

$5 Air Force
In addition to military duties, the Air force of the PLA (HK) undertakes assignments such as emergency and disaster relief assistance, aerial surveys and photography work.
